The FTSE 100 Index UKX closed lower on Friday, dropping by 0.39% to reach a level of 7,417.73.

Decreases in Major Companies

Several major companies within the FTSE 100 saw their stocks decline on Friday. Shell PLC SHEL, a prominent oil and natural gas company, experienced the largest decrease with shares dropping by 4.17%. Compass Group PLC CPG, a renowned restaurants firm, and International Distribution Services PLC IDS, an air freight company, both saw their shares fall by 2.38% and 2.37% respectively. Reckitt Benckiser Group PLC RKT and Sage Group PLC SGE rounded out the top five largest decreases, with their stocks falling by 2.35% and 2.16% respectively.

Increase in Food Retail Company

In contrast to the overall downward trend, Ocado Group PLC OCDO, a food retail company, witnessed a significant increase in its shares as they rallied by 6.48% on Friday.

Notable Climbs in Other Sectors

BT Group PLC BT.A, a provider of wired telecommunications services, experienced a notable increase of 5.70%, while SEGRO PLC SGRO, a company specializing in industrial/office reits, saw its stocks climb by 4.68%. Persimmon PLC PSN, a residential building construction company, and Entain PLC ENT, a player in the gambling industries business, also experienced significant increases of 4.06% and 3.98% respectively.

Currency and Commodity Markets

In terms of currency performance, the pound strengthened against the dollar, rising by 1.46% to reach $1.2381 and increased by 0.36% against the euro to €1.1531.

Brent crude experienced a decline of 1.6% to reach a price of $85.45, while the yield on the 10-year gilt decreased by 9.390 basis points to settle at 4.294%.
